Examples of Succulents:

  • Erythroneura/Fascinator- Red Prayer or Herringbone- bright red veins & underside of leaves

  • Massangeana- Silver Prayer- black/green leaves with silver/gray middle

Baptisia is one of the most beautiful and underused landscape plants.

Varieties: 

  • australis- Blue Wild Indigo

  • alba- White Wild Indigo (pendula is same but seeds hang down, latter is upright)

  • leucantha- Atlantic Wild Indigo- seen at Chicago Botanic Gardens

  • leucophaea- small, mounding, flowers hang instead of upright

  • perfoliata- Georgia Wild Indigo- Catbells, Eucalyptus Wild Indigo, smaller growing, native in SE

  • tinctoria- Yellow Wild Indigo- flowers smaller & more sparse

This amazing houseplant is a collection of diverse shapes, sizes and colors.

  • Dracaena marginata- known for its thin leaves with many different variegation colors or just green foliage

  • Dracaena massangeana- heavy variegation or beautiful green leaves but they are known for having wider leaves and larger stems which are called CANES

  • Dracaena trifasiata- this used to be Sansevieria but has been reclassified as Dracaena

  • Commonly known as Agave, Century Plant, American Aloe

Varieties: 

  • Agave americana- American Century Plant- blue/green with toothed leaves
    Agave americana 'Variegata’- larger grower, blue/green foliage with golden stripes down the leaves

  • Agave angustifolia- Century Plant- gray, green leaves sharp teeth
    Agave attenuata- Foxtail Agave- forms small trunk, green leaves no teeth

  • Agave falcata- small growing, narrow foliage with brown spines
    Agave filifera- Thread-leaf Agave- narrow green leaves, fine white threads

  • Agave montana- medium growing, does not produce offsets, green leaves with red/brown sprines down the leaves

  • Agave ovatifolia- Whale’s Tongue Agave- grey, green leaves with large black tip spikes

Elephant Ear is a beautiful plant that comes in many different sizes and colors. 

Elephant Ear is the common name- there are a few genus that hold this title

  • Caladium (Angel Wings) pictured above

  • Alocasia & Xanthosoma leaf stalks continue kind of as a backbone to the leaves whereas the Colocasia stalk support stops at the leaf. Making Alocasia & Xanthosoma leaves more upright- think of it like this- the shape of the letter A looks like an arrow pointing up- leaves point up!

  • Caladium doesn’t not have a stem at all- even though it looks like it. Petioles rise straight from the bulb
